Leave a gift in your Will

A Will is a document that ensures your property, possessions and money go to the people and causes you care about.

A Will provides you and your family peace of mind and also makes things simpler for your family to sort out afterwards, avoiding any potential complications. Many people put off writing a Will, but it’s generally much simpler than people think. 

If you haven’t yet written a Will, we recommend that you use a qualified solicitor or Will Writer to help you. You can search for a solicitor at www.lawsociety.org.uk.

Or you can search for a professional Will Writer at the Institute of Professional Will Writers www.ipw.org.uk. 

This will make the whole process legal and ensure your wishes are clear. If you already have a Will, a solicitor or Will Writer will be able to amend it for you to include BWC. 

There are three main types of gift you could leave BWC in your will: 

Residuary
This is where you set aside a percentage or the whole of your estate (your property, possessions and savings) to BWC, once all your expenses and other wishes are met. 

This type of gift is an effective way of dividing your estate between the people and causes that are important to you. 

Pecuniary
This is a gift of a fixed sum of money. 

Specific
This is where you leave a specific item to BWC, such as jewellery or antiques. 

Useful wording
If you would like to leave a gift in your will to BWC or you are considering making amendments to your existing will, please ask your solicitor or will writer to use one of these recommended clauses. 

Residuary
I give a share of xxx% (xxx percentage) of the residue of my estate absolutely to Brighton Women’s Centre of 22 Richmond Place, Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 9NA (registered charity number 1003790) to be applied for its general purposes. 

Pecuniary
I give the sum of £xxx (xxx pounds) to Brighton Women’s Centre of 22 Richmond Place, Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 9NA (registered charity number 1003790) to be applied for its general purposes. 

Specific
I give my __________ to Brighton Women’s Centre of 22 Richmond Place, Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 9NA (registered charity number 1003790) to be applied for its general purposes. 

We promise to spend your gift wisely, using every penny as effectively as possible.

We understand that many people are passionate about a particular area of work or want their gift to be spent on a specific project and we’re committed to honouring your wishes as closely as possible. 

However, the work we do, and the needs of the women we support, can change over time – so we can’t be certain where the greatest need will be in years to come. 

Therefore, gifts made unconditionally are the most useful to us. Where possible we ask that any specific requests are stated as a preference and not a condition. 

This is entirely up to you and your individual circumstances.

Loved ones must of course be uppermost in your thoughts but any gift, whatever the amount, really can make a huge difference to the lives of the women and families we support. 

It is entirely up to you if you wish to share the contents of your Will during your lifetime.
