BWC’s Head of Services, Rachael Mackenzie, visited Parliament on 6th November 2024 alongside other NWJC partners and MP Andy Slaughter to discuss the ongoing prison crisis with the focus on diverting women away from custodial sentences and highlighting the value in community-based alternatives such as women’s centres, specialist services and early intervention and diversion services.

Speaking after the event Rachael said

‘It was a pleasure to be invited to Advance’s Parliamentary coffee morning to talk about responding to the prison crisis and supporting women in the criminal justice system. I was proud to talk about our inspiring Care not Custody service, supporting women in contact with Sussex Police and the Probation Service. What a joy it was to hear about the amazing work done by our NJWC colleagues to divert women away from the criminal justice system and to give them hope for the future. An inspiring morning!’

Thank you to Advance and MP Andy Slaughter for hosting the coffee morning as we all continue to champion that change is much needed to support women involved with the criminal justice system.

Care not Custody is a pilot intervention service in partnership with Sussex Police and Probation, and is funded by the Ministry of Justice.
