BRIGHTON TO RECLAIM THE NIGHT: ANNUAL MARCH TO PROTEST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE, CHALLENGE RISING MISOGYNY, AND DEMAND SAFER STREETS FOR ALL
The streets of Brighton will once again be filled with chants, banners, and solidarity as the annual Reclaim The Night Brighton march returns this November. Organised by a coalition of Brighton feminists, survivors, and activists from organisations like Survivors’ Network, Brighton Women’s Centre and The University of Sussex SU, this year’s march invites all members of the community to stand together against gender-based violence, harassment, and discrimination — and to resist the growing misuse of women’s safety to promote hate and division.

WHY WE MARCH
We are living through a national crisis of gender-based violence alongside a steady rise in
misogyny — both online and offline — that threatens the safety, dignity, and rights of women, girls, and marginalised genders.
At the same time, we are witnessing far-right attempts to hijack the conversation about
women’s safety, twisting it to spread racist, transphobic, and exclusionary agendas. These
narratives do nothing to protect survivors or prevent violence; they only divide communities and distract from the real roots of gender-based violence — sexism, patriarchy, and power.
Reclaim The Night Brighton stands firm in the belief that the fight against gender-based
violence must be inclusive, intersectional, and anti-racist.
Our march is for safety, visibility, and equality for everyone — because violence against women and marginalised genders is not caused by any one community, but by systems that uphold inequality and silence survivors. “This past year, we have grappled with the terrifying rise of online misogyny, creating real-life off-screen threats to the safety of women and marginalised genders. We’ve been haunted, sickened and furious at the devastating genocide in Gaza and the shameful treatment of activists who dare to speak out.
“This year, we’ve seen online misogyny spill into real-world harm, felt rage and heartbreak over
the genocide in Gaza, and recently, in a gut-wrenching insult to survivors, we’ve seen far-right
and racist groups hijack the issue of sexual violence to serve hateful agendas. Twisting the knife
in the belly of survivors. All the while, vital services that provide support and care for survivors
are facing a funding crisis and an unpredictable future. Enough is enough,” said Lucy May,
spokesperson for Reclaim The Night Brighton.
“Year on year, our fight grows stronger and our voices grow louder, but where is the change? We need this Reclaim The Night to be bigger and louder than ever before in the face of
threats of gender-based and racial violence, threats to our rights as activists, and threats to
our life-saving services.”
Key Issues Addressed by Reclaim The Night Brighton 2025
- Safer Public Spaces – Calling for local authorities and communities to prioritise safety,
better street lighting, and accountability for harassment in all public spaces. - Survivor Support and Resources – Advocating for increased funding, accessible services,
and trauma-informed care for survivors of sexual violence. - Intersectionality and Inclusion – Highlighting that true safety and equality must include all
identities — women of colour, LGBTQ+ and trans people, disabled individuals, migrants,
and others facing compounded oppression. - Challenging Misogyny and Hate – Condemning the rise of far-right rhetoric that
weaponises women’s safety to spread division, and reaffirming solidarity across all
communities. - Empowering the Next Generation – Encouraging education around healthy relationships,
consent, and emotional intelligence to combat misogyny at its roots.
A NIGHT OF UNITY, RESISTANCE, AND HOPE
It isn’t just the role of Women and those of marginalised genders to defend our rights, Reclaim The Night calls on EVERYONE in our society to turn up and use their voice.

The march will begin at Brighton Station (Queens Road) and move through central Brighton,
concluding at Pavilion Gardens, where there will be speeches, survivor testimonies, and a
candlelight vigil honouring those lost to gender-based violence. Attendees are invited to bring banners, flowers, and lights — symbols of hope and resilience — to light up the night in collective defiance of violence and division. Together, We Reclaim the Night.
Our fight is for safety, justice, and equality — for everyone. We march not only for protection, but for visibility, autonomy, and systemic change.
